About Pennycook...

Welcome to Pennycook School!  Our unique school, located in Vallejo, provides enriching learning experiences for approximately 600 students in preschool through fifth grade.  Our school vision, “We are a caring community of learners who strive for excellence in learning and teaching,” serves as the basis for our school practices.  As a result of our efforts, Pennycook was named a 2010 California Distinguished School!  Pennycook has also earned the "Shining Star" award title from the California Department of Education in 2006 and 2008 due to increases in our student achievement and attendance.

We believe by creating a school that fosters resiliency, feelings of acceptance, a sense of hope and strong home-school relationships, our students will far exceed expectations…and they have!  After many hours of hard work by our students, parents and staff, our API score has steadily risen over 150 points from 666 to 820 since 2000.  We are proud of the work our students, parents and staff have done to increase the academic success of our students.

We are privileged to have a county-wide Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) program at our school that serves more than thirty students preschool through fifth grade.  Many of those students are fully integrated into our regular education classrooms.  Every Wednesday before school, over 80 hearing students attend Sign Language Club meetings to learn sign language.  The classes, taught by two DHH interpreters, assist regular education students in communicating with our DHH students.

Pennycook’s School Based Health Center opened its doors in February of 2004.  The school-based health center provides an array of critical services, including primary medical care, mental health services, health education, nutrition services, and dental care to students in Vallejo’s public schools.  Now many of our students have access to medical care that is close, safe and timely.

Many staff members have been at Pennycook for over 15 years, yet the joy they find in their work is still evident.  You see it as they bounce off to teach on Monday morning.   You see it in the pride in which they discuss a successful lesson.  They bring joy each day to their classrooms.  Kids feel cared for and parents know when they drop their children off that they are in good hands.  One parent stated, “Pennycook IS a special place.”
