Important information for Wednesday, March 14th

Important information for Wednesday, March 14th

On Wednesday March 14 students across the country are planning to leave their classrooms at 10:00 a.m. for 17 minutes to honor the 17 victims in the Parkland Florida school shooting.

In honor of the 14 students and 3 staff members who lost their lives in the February 14, 2018 school shooting in Parkland, Florida, Pennycook students and staff will participate in an activity: “I have a hand in making Pennycook a better place.”  Students and staff will write on a colorful hand ways that they can contribute to making Pennycook a better place.  Students and staff will then bring their hands to the foyer to be posted in the windows.  Students and staff who have questions or concerns will be allowed to write their question on a special note and place that note in a box in the office.  All notes will be reviewed and all questions will be answered.

We want to make sure that we support student voice and that we honor kids who feel strongly about this issue, but we want to do it in a safe way.  We believe the planned activity is age appropriate and the activity falls in line with The American School Counselor Association recommendations:

• Try to keep routines as normal as possible. Kids gain security from the predictability of routine, including attending school.
• Limit exposure to television and the news.
• Be honest with kids and share with them as much information as they are developmentally able to handle.
• Listen to kids’ fears and concerns.
• Reassure kids that the world is a good place to be, but that there are people who do bad things.
• Rebuild and reaffirm attachments and relationships.

If you have any question or concerns, please contact us at 707-556-8590.

As always, working together, Pennycook Scholars are learners today and leaders tomorrow.

Weekly Message Principal Mitchell-Lewis

Hello, this is Mrs. Mitchell-Lewis from Pennycook Elementary School with important information for the week of March 12th-16th.

Remember, every minute of instruction counts... we are looking to get 96% of our students and staff to school and on time every day this week.  Help us meet this goal.  Get students to school for breakfast, park at Castlewood church and walk to school... do what ever it takes to show our students the importance of their education..

March 14th we will have student participating in the District Robotics Competition at Solano Middle School from 5pm-8pm.

Also on March 14th is the Local Control Accountability Plan Community Engagement Meeting here at Pennycook.  These meetings are scheduled for you to provide your input for the development of the VCUSD plan for 2018-2019.  The meeting is from 6pm-7:30pm in the MPR.

Please make sure students are dressed appropriately for the weather with sweaters, jackets, socks and closed toe shoes.

Our lifeskill of the month is integrity.  Students will review what it looks like and sounds like to show integrity.

As always, working together, Pennycook Scholars are learners today and leaders tomorrow.
