This month is Black History Month. Mae Jemison was the first black woman astronaut. When asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she said , “A scientist”. Mae’ love for science took her to the library where she read books about the universe. She also enjoyed science fiction. Jemison also enjoyed acting in plays, dance and being a part of student government. In college she learned to speak Russian and the African language, Swahili. She earned a degree in chemical engineering and African Studies. She then became a medical doctor. She was accepted in the NASA Astronaut Program and later became the first African American woman to orbit the earth on the space shuttle Explorer in 1992.
Our lifeskill of the month is Progress: Teachers and students will review what progress looks like and sounds like.
